Professional Learning Communities

The former principal at Northeast Mid-High School in Oklahoma City, Sue Starr recently completed her doctor of education. In addition to her work as a principal, Sue Starr’s engagement on campus consisted of her becoming a Professional Learning Community (PLC) facilitator.

The PLC model is a school reform model typically used to improve student performance. Among its several objectives is to ensure that each student succeeds, while promoting teachers’ awareness. As part of its approach, systematic strategies are designed to provide struggling students with additional support and time.

PLC depends on systematic collaboration, with the goal of leading students to higher levels of achievement. Teachers work together to discuss and improve their classroom practices, sharing experiences and ideas.

The success of the PLC model depends on the commitment of the school and educators to sustain the continuous improvement of the results-oriented work. Schools can also obtain the assistance of a well-trained PLC facilitator, who may be a teacher of the institution who has the authority and knowledge to lead the PLC development process.
